Sri Lanka - Fixed Network Operators Synopsis
Sri Lanka's telecom sector has seen considerable expansion in recent years, although from a relatively small base. After the liberalisation of telecom sector in 1991, the process was further accelerated when Sri Lanka Telecom was part privatised in 1997 and then subject to an IPO in 2002/03. Sri Lanka Telecom, the provider of basic telephone services in Sri Lanka, started to lose its monopoly status in 1996. The number of fixed-line telephone service operators in the country grew to three, then four, and, together with the country's four licensed mobile operators, by mid-2009 more than 60 other companies had started providing a variety of telecommunications services around the country. Sri Lanka Telecom's share of the total fixed-line subscriber base had fallen to around 42% by 2010; this was down from 87% in 2004. The report looks at Sri Lanka Telecom and some of the other leading players in the market.

Sri Lanka - Internet and the Broadband Market Synopsis
Until 1999, there were only six Internet Service Providers in Sri Lanka. The number has jumped quickly to over 20 and has included a number of innovative operators. As this report indicates, Internet and other forms of data services have been starting to take off in the country, but coverage and accessibility was limited. Internet user penetration was estimated at around 10% by early 2010. The sophistication of the services available generally remained low. The early moves to offer broadband Internet in the country met with limited success and it seemed that it would be some time before there is a substantial broadband market. There had been, however, some promising signs of growth in broadband services from 2007/08 onwards. Of particular interest was the upsurge in activity in the wireless broadband segment of the market, although this had not yet translated into significant subscriber numbers. Overall broadband penetration had reached just 1% by early 2010. As well as providing an overview of Sri Lanka's Internet sector, this report takes a brief look at some of the service providers.

Sri Lanka - Key Statistics, Telecom Market Overview and Forecasts Synopsis
Sri Lanka's telecommunications sector has had to contend with a developing market in the difficult context of a nearly two-decade-long conflict between the government and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. With the end of the war in May 2009 came the hope of an enduring peace and a general improvement in the country's social and economic well-being. This also found the telecom sector well positioned for vigorous growth. As this report describes, there are a range of major initiatives in place that should boost the building of national infrastructure and open the market to more competition. Sri Lanka Telecom losing its monopoly in a number of key areas has led the way, as the market is progressively opened up to more and more competition.

Sri Lanka - Mobile Communications and Broadcasting Synopsis
The highly competitive mobile market in Sri Lanka had been running with a healthy overall annual growth rate of 40%-60% for the last few years. With mobile penetration still relatively low compared with other more developed Asian markets, having reached 76% by the middle of 2010, the strong annual growth seemed to be continuing at around 25%. The market has undoubtedly benefited from its liberalisation and the competition that came with four operators seriously battling it out for market share. This is despite one of these - Dialog Telekom - still clinging to a large slice (44% coming into 2010) of the market. The number of mobile operators increased to five with Bharti Airtel Lanka launching a mobile service in early 2009. Bharti hit the market hard, signing up one million subscribers in just six months. This report presents an overview of mobile phone services in Sri Lanka. The country's TV broadcasting sector is also briefly reviewed.
