 Singapore - Broadcasting

Synopsis For some years now Singapore's TV broadcasting sector has been feeling the impact of convergence. The liberalisation of the media industry in Singapore was triggered in 2000 when the then Ministry of Information and the Arts announced that broadcasting operators could ‘look at' the telecommunications sector and telecommunications companies could ‘look at' the broadcasting sector. A new regulator for the sector, the Media Development Authority, was duly put in place. Whilst the media sector was initially slow to respond, it did finally take off and there has been substantial development over the last decade. The phenomenon of convergence eventually took hold and, although it has not exactly taken the expected path, it has given the sector a fresh boost. This report looks at the changes in the digital media market and the impact on the major players and customers.
