Philippines - Broadcasting The Philippines has a vibrant media sector. Ownership has been predominantly private and freedom of the press is guaranteed by the constitution. The first television broadcast was in 1953. There are six FTA nationwide television networks. Philippines - Major Telecommunications Players Formerly a monopoly market of the Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) overseen by the government, the Philippines telecommunications industry is now highly competitive following the dismantling of the exclusive regime and opening it up to other telecom companies in 1993. As a result of deregulation, ten new companies entered the market to challenge the former incumbent, PLDT, fixed-line costs began to fall and nationwide teledensity improved markedly. However, PDLT remains the nation's principal domestic and international fixed-line provider and continues to operate the most extensive nationwide domestic fibre optic network and microwave long-distance network.
