 Philippines - Broadband Market
Compared with many of its Asian neighbours, the Philippines had been moving slowly on the adoption of Internet. Of the estimated 7% of the population who constitute the Internet user population in 2008, only a fraction of these were using a broadband connection to go online. Nevertheless, with the data and Internet markets well positioned for growth, the country's broadband market had finally started to expand, the annual increase in broadband subscribers running at in excess of 100% in successive years. However, for future growth to be sustainable the provision of reliable infrastructure remains critical. This report looks at the various projects and initiatives as the government continues to encourage development of broadband.

 Philippines - Broadcasting
The Philippines has a vibrant media sector. Ownership has been predominantly private and freedom of the press is guaranteed by the constitution. The first television broadcast was in 1953. There are six free-to-air nationwide television networks. Cable TV was launched as long ago as 1969, but it is only now starting to really grow, substantially boosted by the prospect of bundling broadcasting with Internet, telephony and other services. While DTH satellite TV has been available in the Philippines since 1999, its large scale adoption awaits the entry of a major player - possibly PLDT - into the market. This report provides a broad overview of the Philippines television broadcasting market.

 Philippines - Internet Services
It remains true to say that Internet has not yet really taken off in the Philippines. With the estimated number of Internet users only involving around 7% of the population by 2008, Internet penetration is relatively low compared to many of its Asian neighbours. The Internet sector is, however, well positioned for growth, with a deregulated market, strong government support for IT development, and an increasingly Internet savvy population. In fact, in the 2007/08 period and into 2009 we appear to be seeing a significant upturn in the country's Internet market, with broadband access expanding rapidly. The stimulation and growth of e-commerce will, of course, depend on increasing the accessibility of Internet, greater PC penetration and the enactment by the government of appropriately legislation. This report looks at the development of the Internet and related e-commerce activities in the Philippines.

Philippines - Key Statistics Telecom Market and Regulatory Overviews
While the telecom sector in the Philippines has witnessed considerable investment and activity since deregulation in 1993, the market has fallen short of its potential. However, there are strong signs that this is changing. While the mobile market has been energetic for some years now, the fixed-line market has started to move again and, most significantly, the broadband Internet sector is finally building a healthy subscriber base. The global financial problems were, however, introducing some uncertainty into the local market coming into 2009. This report provides a statistical overview of the Philippines telecoms market. The difficulty in obtaining accurate statistical information on the market is noted; for some indicators official figures are only available to 2006.

 Philippines - Major Telecommunications Players
Formerly a monopoly market of the Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) overseen by the government, the Philippines telecommunications industry is now highly competitive following the dismantling of the exclusive regime and opening it up to other telecom companies in 1993. As a result of deregulation, ten new companies entered the market to challenge the former incumbent, PLDT, fixed-line costs began to fall and nationwide teledensity improved markedly. However, PLDT remains the nation's principal domestic and international fixed-line provider and continues to operate the most extensive nationwide domestic fibre optic network and microwave long-distance network.
