Pakistan - Telecoms Market Trends & Forecasts Synopsis
Pakistan has found transitioning from a regulated state-owned monopoly telecom market to a deregulated competitive structure very challenging. Penetrations of fixed-line and Internet services have remained relatively low. The mobile market, however, has taken off, with high annual growth being achieved. In fact, it is looking like a sustained development phase, despite a moderating growth rate coming into 2009. For fixed lines, the government was targeting 7% teledensity by 2010, which a substantial proportion in rural areas, but that was overly ambitious. The Internet market certainly has huge potential, but there is a long way to go. There has been good news with a surge in broadband subscriber numbers in 2007/2008. This report looks at the fixed-line, mobile and Internet segments of the Pakistan market and provides scenario forecasts for each of these market segments.
