Northern Mariana Islands - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics Telecommunications in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) make use of the latest digital fibre optic cables and satellites that are connected to worldwide networks. Full use of these technologies allows the islands to have some of the most advanced telecommunications in the world today. A wide range of services are available to the islanders, including dial-up and broadband Internet, cellular, integrated voice and data systems, international private lines, payphones, prepaid phone cards, voicemail, automatic call distribution systems, and call accounting systems. In September 2005 Philippine-based company Pacific Telecom Inc became the new owner of the Commonwealth's sole telephone company, Micronesian Telecommunications Corporation (Verizon Pacifica). Also in 2005, two GSM networks were launched. Up-to-date statistics for Internet and fixed lines are currently not available in this report.
