Nicaragua - Telecoms Mobile and Broadband After Haiti, Nicaragua has the second lowest GDP per capita and the second lowest teledensity in Latin America. Mobile penetration however ranks fifth from last in the region, and mobile phones exceed the number of fixed lines by more than eleven to one. Nicaragua's fixed-line sector was liberalised officially in 2005 and a Competition Law was issued in 2006, but full liberalisation is waiting for the government to create an independent anti-monopoly authority (ProCompetencia). The process has been delayed by political squabbles and never-ending bureaucratic muddles. América Móvil holds a virtual monopoly over the country's fixed lines through Enitel, it controls two thirds of the mobile market through Claro, and in 2008 it acquired the country's leading cable TV company Estesa. VoIP, however, is open to full competition and there are several companies offering VoIP service. This report provides an overview of the country's telecom sector accompanied by relevant statistics and analyses.
