Kiribati - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics
Kiribati's telecommunications sector was liberalised with the formation of Telecom Kiribati Ltd and Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd (TSKL). Telecom Kiribati is fully-owned by the government while TSKL is a privatised company. The telecommunications infrastructure is limited by the large distances involved; consequently not all the island groups have telecommunications services. Internet service started in 1998 with the introduction of a 64Kb data link to Telstra's BigPond in Australia via the Tarawa Earth Station. In December 2004 TSKL launched a GSM mobile network with an initial capacity for 2,000 subscribers. Please note that this report is updated infrequently due to limited availability of information on the local telecoms market. By late 2006 Kiribati had set up a new telecommunication authority, which is independent of the operator. New ISPs could possibly emerge in 2007 and 2008. Up-to-date statistics for Internet, fixed-line voice and mobile services are currently not available in this report.
