Jamaica - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics Jamaica's telecom infrastructure is relatively advanced by Caribbean standards and boasts one of the highest mobile penetration rates in the region. In contrast, fixed-line teledensity, currently experiencing a downward trend, is one of the lowest in the Caribbean. Despite liberalisation and the award of numerous licences, Cable & Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) continues to dominate fixed lines in an environment in which local loop unbundling still remains on the drawing board. Mobile telephony, on the other hand, has experienced considerable growth since the market was opened to competition, resulting in approximately seven mobile phones for every fixed line in service. Meanwhile the cable market is witnessing a period of rapid consolidation. Recent investment in wireless and cable broadband, together with the launch of two new submarine fibre optic cables, are expected to drive broadband growth during 2008/09. This report provides an overview of the country's telecom sector accompanied by relevant statistics, and brief profiles of the main operators.
