Guam - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics
The island of Guam has one of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructure and systems in the South Pacific region, accessible to the nexus of the Pacific's underwater fibre optics cabling network, establishing Guam as a telecom hub for numerous international providers. Submarine cables link the island with Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Australia. Local fixed-line telephone services are provided by the Guam Telephone Authority (GTA), previously an autonomous government agency that was fully privatised by the sale to TeleGuam Holdings in December 2004. Growth in both the Internet and broadband sectors as well as the cellular mobile market (served by five operators) has been substantial since the beginning of the decade and this trend is expected to continue into 2007. By late 2006, a wireless broadband service via wireless hotspots was available throughout the island. At the same time, over 50% of the broadband market was being supplied via cable modem access.
