Dominican Republic - Telecoms Market Overview Statistics & Forecasts The Dominican Republic's fixed-line teledensity, at around 10%, lags well behind the Latin American average. In contrast, with about five times more cell phones than fixed lines, cellular penetration approximates the Latin American average. The communications markets in the Dominican Republic are modernising relatively quickly, with the economic recovery of 2005-2007 encouraging investments in emerging services such as wireless broadband and VoIP. For 2006/07 the World Economic Forum ranked the country 66th out of around 120 countries for ICT readiness and participation, up from 89th the previous year. Nevertheless, the Dominican Republic's income inequalities are still reflected in its telephone distribution; some people own multiple cell phones each, yet there are communities comprising hundreds of families without access to a single phone line. This report provides an overview of the country's fixed line, cellular and Internet sectors accompanied by relevant statistics, analyses and forecasts.
